Institute for the Study of种族和民族

The Institute for the Study of 种族和民族 (ISRE) promotes high quality teaching and rigorous policy-oriented RESEARCH emphasizing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches, as well as the methods of the traditional 社会 sciences and humanities disciplines.

The Institute seeks to establish as a major archive and RESEARCH center in the southeast United States focusing on the experiences of African-Americans.

The Institute seeks to develop, promote and implement academic, RESEARCH and public service programs that focus on the study of race and ethnicity in Hampton Roads, 维吉尼亚州, 这个国家, and throughout the African Diaspora.

The Institute for the Study of 种族和民族 goals are to:

  • Develop leaders and facilitate the evolution of a society, which challenges stereotypes, 偏见, 歧视, and belief systems that hinder the 知识 emancipation, and personal growth of all members of society.

    African-American and African Studies

     About African American and African Studies

    African-American Studies (or Black Studies) is rooted in the 社会 movements led by African-Americans in the 1960's. 在这场斗争中, debates regarding the structure and goals of material that were taught inside the standard college classroom soon led to the advent of Black Studies programs at various colleges and universities. The participants in the movement maintained that the Black experience in America was being ignored, 尽管, its impact on the 社会 landscape of 这个国家. Many African-Americans and Whites pursued the goals of political and 社会 equality and fought for the development of a college curriculum that would be inclusive of the African American experience.

     ODU's African American and African Studies Programs

    ODU offers African-American and African Studies (AAST) Minor and Bachelor's programs, offering an opportunity to explore the cultural, 知识, 经济, 宗教, 艺术, 社会, and political history of various people who are African or of African descent. In addition, the Honors college offers a certifiate in African-American Studies. 这些政治, 社会, 经济, cultural and historical experiences of African-Americans and other communities of color are important dimensions emphasized in the work of the Institute.
